for now, from the university of denver, i'm jim lehrer, thank you and good night. i'm wolf blitzer. there's enormous pressure on president obama and governor romney right now. we're asking debate watchers, those who watched the debate to the history books. tonight, just like we will after every upcoming debate, we're breaking it down, issue by issue. this means more talk from the candidate on a particular topic. looking at some of the totals, we'll show you what's going on. but, first, here are some of the highlights from the first presidential debate. >> what things would i cut from spending? first of all, i will eliminate all programs by this test. if they don't pass it. is the program so critical, it's worth boring money from china to pay for it? obama care is on my list. i apologize mr. president. jim, i'm sorry, i had stop the subsidy to pbs. i love big bird, like you too. but i won't keep on spending money to borrow money from china to pay for. i'll take programs that are currently good programs but could be run more efficiently at the state level and send them to state. and m

when it got to the role of golf, jim lehrer asked that and i thought they stated their case and mitt romney stated it well where he said he doesn't believe the federal government can do much that is better than the private sector can be left to do or individuals can do and barack obama, you know, he started by saying the major role of government is keeping its people safe. but that is a fundamental disagreement between conservatives and liberals. i think -- i don't know that too many people would have been confused about their answers or would have expected them to say something else but i think it's important that your vote this time around is determined by what role you think government should have. the key difference to remember is in the last four years with the economic collapse, we live in a world, in a country where 71% of economic decisions are directed by the american, by the voter, by the consumer. when that drops, because of the fact that people don't have money and they don't have jobs, who fills in for it? >> the fed. >> that is what some of the thinking is. the governme
